Soccer Star Ronaldinho to be honored as PAHO WHO Champion of Health in New York City Aug. 11 Aug 14th 2006

WHAT: A top world soccer player, Brazilian star Ronaldo de Assis Moreira, “Ronaldinho Gaucho,” will be honored by the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Regional Office of the World Health Organization (WHO), in New York City this Friday, August 11, as a Champion of Health in recognition for his humanitarian contributions and support of PAHO’s Vaccination Week in the Americas and Youth Violence Awareness campaigns.

WHO: PAHO Deputy Director Dr. Joxel Garcia, soccer star honoree Ronaldo de Assis Moreira “Ronaldinho Gaucho,” and invited guests.
WHY: Brazilian soccer star Ronaldinho has made humanitarian causes an integral part of his public life, supporting the work of the Pan American Health Organization focusing on vaccination efforts in all countries of the hemisphere and youth violence awareness campaigns.
PAHO: The Pan American Health Organization, based in Washington D.C., works with all the countries of the Western Hemisphere to improve the health and living standards of their peoples. Vaccination campaigns have succeeded in eradicating smallpox and polio from the region, measles transmission has been eliminated, and rubella elimination is now under way.
