Joint development of curriculum Greater international and practical focus.

Lufthansa and the European Business School (ebs) have jointly developed a new “Aviation Management“ course. The curriculum is specially tailored to suit the requirements of the aviation business and specifically those of the Lufthansa Group whose staff are based in a variety of countries around the world. “Our aim is to give greater international and practical emphasis to the training of our young executives. Interdisciplinary and networked thinking, intercultural awareness, linguistic proficiency and international experience as well as the ability to act entrepreneurially are all core competencies which are essential for working successfully in a global environment. It is those skills that we intend to communicate with the new Aviation Management course in unison with the European Business School. We offer talented young people highly qualified training and an attractive career entry in the Lufthansa Group,“ said Stefan Lauer, Member of the Lufthansa Executive Board. “With this programme we are pioneering in partnership with Lufthansa an academically highly demanding and innovative course of study in a future-oriented international labour market. Its distinctive feature lies in the quality that we at the European Business School guarantee and the successful integration of business administration science with specific know-how in aviation management and the furtherance of social competencies. Basically, the programme is open to all interested persons. Applicants for the Aviation Management course at the European Business School, however, can only apply directly to an airline. At present, Lufthansa is our exclusive partner. In addition to the ebs tuition, Lufthansa offers an aviation commercial training course. We are highly delighted with this cooperation”, said Professor Ulrich Hommel, Rector of the European Business School International University Schloss Reichartshausen. The new course lasts six terms and leads to a “Bachelor of Science“ degree. All lectures, case studies and project work are in English. Alongside practical phases, the curriculum includes a posting abroad. The young executives from Lufthansa on the ebs course will additionally attend the customary Lufthansa aviation commercial training course including diverse on-the-job internships at operational and administrative posts in the Lufthansa Group. The two-year aviation commercial training course ends with a final examination at the Frankfurt Chamber of Commerce (IHK). Together with the European Business School, Lufthansa has drawn up a specific study module “Aviation Management” for the curriculum of the new course and shortlisted professors and lecturers for appointment to teaching posts. “The curriculum is tailored more closely than previous courses to the needs of the aviation business. The combination of business administration training with a bachelor degree of university level is currently unique,“ noted Christoph Fay, Head of HR Marketing and Talent Sourcing of Lufthansa. “This practice-oriented tuition is a pioneering innovation in the education market.” Lufthansa will select a total of 18 students each semester. The new “Aviation Management“ course commences in the winter term 2006. Candidates can apply now at www.Be-Lufthansa.com. In cooperation with other companies, Lufthansa is a firm advocate of re-engineering the structure of German university education into a two-tier internationally comparable system leading to a bachelor degree. Those companies were signatory to a “Bachelor Welcome!“ declaration in 2004, in which they undertook to offer students graduating from the new courses suitable career prospects. “This is both a challenge and an opportunity,” said Christoph Fay. “The qualifications graduates acquire on completing their course are internationally comparable and more transparent. For students, that means more flexibility in their studies. On the bachelor degree course, they are trained systematically and thoroughly for specific activities, and acquire professional skills suited to their future employment.” Within the framework of its HR Marketing and Talent Sourcing programme (Lufthansa School of Business) and Advanced Course Tuition for Employees (Corporate College), Lufthansa has for many years been cooperating with German and international universities. Among them are the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Darmstadt Technical University. Additionally, Lufthansa is a founding member of the Berlin-based European School of Management and Technology. The European Business School enjoys an excellent reputation. It has for years ranked in the forefront of academic institutions offering courses in business administration.
